Success is a funny thing. By Friday, you’ve had enough time to look back at your week and realize something: Not everything that went “right” actually went well.
Some successes feel good at first… but they quietly break you over time.
I’ve had moments where I accomplished something big, something people celebrated, something that looked impressive, but inside, I felt smaller, not bigger. I felt stretched, not strengthened. I felt pressured, not blessed.
It took me years to understand this simple truth:
Success that breaks your soul isn’t success. It’s erosion.
The world won’t tell you that. The world will clap for anything that looks productive. The world will celebrate anything that looks impressive. The world will applaud anything that looks like momentum.
But God doesn’t measure success by applause, He measures it by alignment.
I’ve had “successful” seasons where:
-
My schedule was full but my spirit was empty
-
My influence was growing but my peace was shrinking
-
My accomplishments were stacking up but my joy was slipping away
-
My name was being mentioned but my heart was being neglected
And here’s the part that stings: People around you will cheer for the version of you that’s breaking… as long as it looks successful.
But God won’t.
God loves you too much to let you succeed in things that destroy you. He loves you too much to let you win battles that cost your soul. He loves you too much to let you chase victories that pull you away from Him.
Some of the greatest mercies in my life were the successes God didn’t let me have.
Some of the greatest blessings were the opportunities He blocked. Some of the greatest victories were the doors He closed. Some of the greatest protections were the “failures” that saved me.
So here’s my Friday encouragement:
Pay attention to the success that breaks you. Pay attention to the victories that feel heavy instead of holy. Pay attention to the achievements that leave you tired instead of thankful. Pay attention to the applause that doesn’t match your peace.
Because real success, the kind Heaven recognizes, doesn’t fracture you. It forms you. It doesn’t drain you. It deepens you. It doesn’t pull you away from God. It roots you in Him.
And sometimes the most successful thing you can do on a Friday… is stop, breathe, and say, “Lord, I don’t want any success that costs me You.”
