The Way Anticipation Shapes Us

There’s something sacred about shared anticipation, that moment before kickoff when hope is high, the slate is clean, and anything feels possible. It’s the feeling every college football fan knows well. The grill is warming, the pre‑game show is blasting, and for a few hours the whole world feels like it’s moving forward.

And it struck me this morning… Why don’t we anticipate the Lord’s Day the same way?

We look forward to Saturday’s college football games because we expect something good. We expect excitement. We expect community. We expect moments we’ll talk about later. We expect to feel something.

But Sunday, the Lord’s Day, is the one gathering where God Himself promises to meet us. Not symbolically. Not theoretically. Actually.

Yet too often we stroll into Sunday service casually, as if nothing special is about to happen. No excitement drawing us forward. No expectation. No sense that the slate is clean and anything feels possible.

But it is.

Every Lord’s Day is a kickoff of grace. A fresh start. A new word. A new mercy. A new moment where God might surprise us.

Scripture says, “In the morning, Lord, You hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before You and wait expectantly.” ( Psalm 5:3 )

If we can anticipate a football game with excitement, surely we can anticipate worship with reverence and joy. If we can gather around a TV or in a stadium with unity, surely we can gather around God's Word with hunger and thirst. If we can believe our team might win, surely we can believe our God will move.

So as we enjoy the build‑up to Saturday’s games, let’s let that anticipation teach us something:

The Lord’s Day deserves our expectation. Our preparation. Our excitement. Our looking forward to meeting with HIM.

Because the same God who meets us in the stadium of life meets us even more deeply in His house.

And that’s worth looking forward to.
