Things Long Forgotten

Every now and then, something small will stir the dust in the attic of your memory, a scent, a sound, a quiet moment, and suddenly you’re standing face‑to‑face with something long forgotten. Not lost, just tucked away. Life has a way of piling new responsibilities, new worries, new seasons on top of old moments until they slip beneath the surface.

This morning, as I stepped outside and felt that early September air, not quite summer, not yet fall, I remembered a place I hadn’t thought about in years. A dirt road behind my childhood home, the one where the trees leaned in close like they were trying to listen. I used to walk that road barefoot, kicking at rocks, talking to God like He was walking right beside me. No fancy prayers. No theology. Just a boy and his Creator, sharing the quiet.

I had forgotten that road.

And I wonder how many of us have forgotten our own roads, the places where God first whispered to us, the moments where faith felt simple, the memories that shaped us long before we knew they were shaping anything.

We forget the sound of someone’s laughter who once made us feel safe. We forget the smell of a kitchen where love was cooked into every meal. We forget the dreams we had before life taught us to be practical. We forget the prayers we prayed before we learned to be polished.

But here’s the thing: God doesn’t forget.

He remembers every tear, every hope, every promise, every moment when your heart leaned toward Him. And sometimes He brings those forgotten things back to the surface, not to make us nostalgic, but to make us whole.

Maybe the things long forgotten are actually the things we need to remember again.

The innocence of early faith. The courage we had before fear grew loud. The joy we felt before life got complicated. The calling we sensed before we talked ourselves out of it.

Today, I’m letting God dust off a few old memories. Not to live in the past, but to reclaim the parts of myself I left there. The parts He planted long ago. The parts that still matter.

If you’re reading this, maybe it’s time for you to revisit a few forgotten places too. Not all memories are meant to stay buried. Some are seeds, and seeds only grow when they’re brought back into the light.
