WHY: WHEN YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND THE PURPOSE

Isaiah 63:1 “Who is this… mighty to save?”

Today we reach the third W — WHY.

It’s the question that sits beneath pain, beneath confusion, beneath delay, beneath every season that doesn’t make sense:

“Lord… why is this happening?”

Why this path? Why this pressure? Why this timing? Why this struggle? Why this silence? Why this battle?

The “why” question is the one that keeps believers awake at night. It’s the one that makes the heart ache. It’s the one that makes faith feel thin.

But Isaiah gives us a picture today that reframes everything.

He sees Someone approaching, Someone whose garments are stained, Someone who has been in the thick of battle, Someone who has just executed judgment and secured victory.

Isaiah doesn’t understand it. He doesn’t know the details. He doesn’t know the story behind the scene.

So he asks: “Who is this?”

Not “Why did You do this?” Not “Why did this happen?” Not “Why this way?”

He asks WHO.

And the answer comes:

“I… mighty to save.”

In other words:

The WHY is always tied to the WHO.

You may not understand the purpose, but you can trust the Person.

You may not see the reason, but you can trust the Redeemer.

You may not know the explanation, but you can trust the One who is mighty to save.

God’s “why” is never cruel. It is never careless. It is never meaningless.

It is always shaped by the heart of Jesus, the One who fights for you, the One who protects you, the One who carries you, the One who sees what you cannot see.

Sometimes the “why” is hidden because the work is happening in places you cannot yet enter.

Sometimes the “why” is delayed because the purpose is still being formed.

Sometimes the “why” is painful because the victory requires a battle.

But every “why” in your life is held by the One Isaiah saw, the One who steps out of Bozrah with victory already secured.

So today, instead of asking: “Why is this happening?”

Ask: “Who is working in this?”

Because when you know who is behind the purpose, you can trust the purpose even when you don’t understand it.

And if you still don’t know the answer…
